Rivers are the lifeline of our environment. They provide water, food, and balance to the ecosystem. Yet, in many parts of Sindh, pollution has turned these life-giving rivers into sources of disease and decay. River Mirwah in Khairpur is one such example. Once a clean and beautiful river, it has suffered from waste dumping, lack of maintenance, and public neglect.

To address this growing issue, SENDHO (Sindh Education Nutrition Development and Health Organisation) is launching a community campaign titled “Clean River, Clean Future” a collective effort to clean, restore, and protect River Mirwah while spreading awareness about the importance of environmental care.

The Purpose Behind the Cleanup

The goal of the River Mirwah Cleanup Drive is simple but powerful: to inspire local communities to take ownership of their environment. A clean river doesn’t just look better, it supports clean water, better health, and a safer ecosystem.

SENDHO believes that a healthy environment is essential for a healthy Sindh. Through this initiative, we aim to:

  • Remove waste and plastic pollution from River Mirwah.

  • Educate residents about the dangers of water pollution.

  • Promote sustainable community practices for cleanliness.

  • Encourage youth and volunteers to take action for their surroundings.

The Event: Community in Action

On the day of the cleanup, volunteers, students, and residents will gather along the River Mirwah banks with gloves, tools, and a shared determination to make a difference.

Teams will work together to collect garbage, clear plastic waste, and separate recyclable materials. SENDHO members will also distribute awareness pamphlets and lead short discussions about waste management, hygiene, and the link between pollution and public health.

Impact: Small Steps, Big Change

By the end of the day, large portions of the riverbank will be visibly cleaner. But the real success of the project will not just be in the amount of waste collected, it will be in the mindset change among participants.

Volunteers express how eye-opening the experience is and pledge to continue spreading awareness about keeping public spaces clean.

Schools in Khairpur should also show interest in partnering with SENDHO for future environmental activities.

Why River Mirwah Matters

River Mirwah is more than just a water source; it is a symbol of local heritage and a vital part of Khairpur’s ecosystem. Restoring it means improving water quality, reducing disease, and preserving biodiversity.

SENDHO’s mission connects education, health, and environment and projects like this highlight how all three are linked. When the environment is clean, children grow healthier, and communities thrive.

What’s Next

The River Mirwah Cleanup Drive is just the beginning. SENDHO plans to:

  • Conduct monthly cleanups with community groups.

  • Introduce eco-education programs in local schools.

  • Advocate for stronger waste management systems with local authorities.

We believe that real change happens when people come together for a common purpose and Sindh needs that unity now more than ever.

Conclusion

The River Mirwah Cleanup Drive reminds us that when a community takes responsibility for its environment, transformation begins. SENDHO is proud to stand with the people of Khairpur in creating a cleaner, healthier, and greener Sindh.
